Cards, visas, relatives
Huellas TIE Vigo: prints at a police desk, then a card with your photo
Within a month of arriving on a long-stay visa, or once a permit is granted here, book the police appointment for fingerprints, known as the toma de huellas, under the province of Pontevedra; bring form EX-17 with the fee paid, and later collect the card where your confirmation sent you. The card itself (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) bears your photograph and NIE, and states what kind of residence you hold and until when.
Who it concerns
Non-EU residents arriving on a long-stay visa, or whose permit was approved here, who now need the card.
The forms
- EX-17
- Modelo 790 código 012
Where it is done
Named on the cita previa confirmation you receive; policia.es lists TIE issue at its five units of the province of Pontevedra
Put these in your folder
- EX-17, completed and signed
- Passport with the visa page, and a copy of it
- Colour photo, white background
- Receipt of the 790-012: bank-stamped copy, or proof of online payment
- Padrón volante
- The resolution, if granted in Spain
The moment to book
Entered Spain on a long-stay visa? Book as soon as you land: the application is expected within a month of your entry. Was your permit approved while you were already in Spain? Then the favourable decision is what starts the count. Stays of six months or less do not lead to a TIE.
The EX-17 folder
Not on the padrón yet? The Concello de Vigo registers foreigners on a passport and proof of the home.
- Form EX-17, completed and signed
- Passport with the visa in it, and a photocopy
- A recent colour photo with a plain white background
- Receipt of the 790-012: bank-stamped copy, or proof of online payment
- The resolution granting your authorisation, if it was decided in Spain
- A padrón volante or certificate, which offices often ask to see
Where prints are taken in the province
Issuing the TIE is police work, as the Delegación del Gobierno states. Today policia.es shows “expedición de TIE” at all five of its units for foreigners in the province of Pontevedra: the Brigada on C/ Joaquín Costa 17 in Pontevedra, and the units in Tui, Marín, Vilagarcía de Arousa and Salvaterra de Miño. Vigo is not on that list; until early 2024 it carried the station on C/ Álvaro Cunqueiro 6, to which the Universidade de Vigo’s guide still sends incoming staff. Book the fingerprint procedure for Pontevedra and attend the office your confirmation prints.
The resguardo, then the card
The fingerprint appointment ends with a resguardo, the slip proving that the card has been applied for. Keep it with your passport: you show it when you return for the card, once it is ready. Before leaving the counter with the card, check each line: name, NIE, dates.
A new card after renewal or loss
A renewed residence usually ends with another fingerprint appointment for the new card. A lost or stolen TIE is first reported to the police, then replaced; if you have to travel in between, the return authorisation is the paper to look at.
In Vigo
From Vigo, the fingerprint appointment is booked under Pontevedra. Today’s policia.es list shows TIE issue at all five units for foreigners of the province, from C/ Joaquín Costa 17 in Pontevedra to Tui on the Miño, and none in Vigo; C/ Álvaro Cunqueiro 6 was on it until early 2024 and the Universidade de Vigo still points there. The confirmation names the office for you.
Questions people ask about this
Huellas TIE Vigo: is there an office in the city?
Not on the current policia.es list, which places TIE issue in Pontevedra, Tui, Marín, Vilagarcía de Arousa and Salvaterra de Miño. Until early 2024 it included C/ Álvaro Cunqueiro 6 in Vigo, which the Universidade de Vigo still names. Your booking decides.
Should I register on the padrón first?
It helps. Offices commonly ask for proof of address, and the Concello de Vigo registers foreigners on a passport.
My new card shows a NIE I already had. Is that right?
Yes. The card prints the number assigned to you earlier, with the visa or before it; a NIE is never replaced.
