NIE Vigo

Number, booking, Europeans

The NIE for Vigo: the number by itself, or tucked inside a residence paper

Keep your home abroad and only need to sign, buy, inherit or work here? Then the NIE comes alone: request it on form EX-15 at a police appointment booked for the province of Pontevedra, or at a Spanish consulate. Moving to Vigo? It comes printed on your green certificate or your TIE instead. Either way the Policía Nacional assigns your Número de Identidad de Extranjero once, and for life.

Settling on the ría, or only passing through

People who move to Vigo to live rarely ask for the number by itself. A European finds it printed on the green certificate issued when registering as a resident. A non-European usually receives it together with the visa or the authorisation, and finds it printed again on the TIE card.

Asking for the number alone suits people who keep their home in another country: a Portuguese welder who drives up from Valença each morning, an Irish couple buying a flat in Baiona, an engineer sent by a supplier for a few weeks at a plant in O Porriño. They leave with the number and a certificate showing it. Neither gives them any right to live here.

The EX-15, read before you sign it

The form wants your details as your passport gives them, an address for official notices, and the reason you need a number. That last box carries more weight than it looks. State the reason in plain words, a purchase, a job, an inheritance, a place on a course, and attach the paper behind it: a signed job offer, the reservation agreement for a flat, a notary’s letter, a university admission.

Sign it by hand, keep a photocopy with it, and fill it in at home. Writing it out at the desk is how mistakes happen.

Which police desk, and why it may not be in Vigo

The number is police work. The Delegación del Gobierno puts the NIE among the procedures handled by police offices, not by the Oficina de Extranjería on Rúa Teófilo Llorente. The current policia.es directory of units for foreigners shows “certificados y asignación de NIE” for Pontevedra’s Brigada Provincial de Extranjería y Fronteras, C/ Joaquín Costa 17 (986 868 849), and for the units of Tui, Vilagarcía de Arousa and Salvaterra de Miño. Vigo is not on that list, and no opening hours are published.

Two other sources point to Vigo itself: until early 2024 the same police list carried the Comisaría de Vigo Traviesas, C/ Álvaro Cunqueiro 6, and the Universidade de Vigo’s arrival guide still sends newcomers there. Rather than choose between them, let the booking decide: a cita previa for the province of Pontevedra ends with a confirmation naming an office, so plan your day around that address.

Still abroad? The consulate route

Living abroad, you can file the EX-15 with the Spanish consulate responsible for your area instead. Consulates keep their own diaries and their own lists of papers, so start from your consulate’s page. A number assigned there is the very one you would have been given here, and it stays yours if you later settle in Galicia.

What hangs from the number

The NIE says who you are and nothing more: the right to stay or work rests on EU citizenship, recorded by registering, or on a visa or permit. Still, expect to quote it again and again:

  • In the escritura (deed) signed at a notary’s office
  • For a Spanish bank account, and for any mortgage
  • On your work contract, and when your employer registers you with Social Security
  • On tax returns, non-resident owners’ included
  • For electricity, water, gas and internet contracts
  • To buy a car or a boat, to inherit, or to hold shares

In Vigo

From Vigo, Cangas or Nigrán, the number is booked for the province of Pontevedra. On today’s policia.es list, the Brigada on C/ Joaquín Costa 17, Pontevedra (986 868 849), and the units in Tui, Vilagarcía de Arousa and Salvaterra de Miño include NIE assignment; Vigo does not appear, though until early 2024 the list carried C/ Álvaro Cunqueiro 6, which the Universidade de Vigo still names. Your confirmation settles which office expects you.
