Studying in Vigo: the papers for a term, a year or a whole degree

Your passport decides the papers, not the course you chose. European students (EU, EEA, Swiss) here for over three months take form EX-18 to a police desk and come away with the green certificate; everyone else arrives on a student visa and, if staying beyond six months, books fingerprints for a TIE. Students come to Vigo for degrees, exchanges, research and language courses, at the Universidade de Vigo and other centres.

  2. Letter of admission or enrolment
  3. Health insurance
  4. Proof of means
  5. The printed booking

A European passport in your bag

No visa is needed. Past three months in Vigo, you register on form EX-18 as a student, with proof of your enrolment, health cover (a European Health Insurance Card, or private insurance) and your signed statement that your means are sufficient.

Any other passport: the visa first

From outside the EU, a stay for studies begins abroad, at whichever Spanish consulate serves your home: the letter of admission, proof of means, health insurance and whatever else it lists. The visa comes back in your passport, usually with a NIE already assigned. If the stay is longer than six months, you then book the TIE prints soon after landing.

Staying for another course year

Staying on means requesting an extension (prórroga) while the present stay is still running. Stays for studies appear on the procedures list of the Oficina de Extranjería in Vigo, and Mercurio, the State’s online platform, accepts these applications from home. On the police side, the Brigada in Pontevedra and other units of the province show students and extensions of stay on policia.es. Your file, then your confirmation, decide where each step goes.

A job beside the course

Students from outside the EU may take paid work compatible with their studies, within the limits the rules set. Check with us, or with the university, before signing a contract.

The university’s doors for newcomers

At the Universidade de Vigo, the Oficina de Relacións Internacionais, in the Edificio Miralles on the Marcosende campus, handles incoming exchange students and sends them information on visas, accommodation and enrolment. Its Centro de Linguas, in the Facultade de Filoloxía e Tradución, teaches Spanish as a foreign language from beginner to advanced levels and is a DELE exam centre. Outside the university, the Escola Oficial de Idiomas de Vigo, on Martínez Garrido, has a Spanish department for foreigners, which asks foreign students to hold a NIE.

Your first weeks in the city

Start with the padrón: the Concello de Vigo registers students on a passport and proof of where they live.

  • Register on the padrón at the Concello de Vigo
  • Book the green certificate or the TIE fingerprints
  • Open a bank account with your NIE
  • Keep copies of everything the consulate saw

In Vigo

Students at the Universidade de Vigo find their papers split: stays for studies sit on the Oficina de Extranjería’s list at Rúa Teófilo Llorente 4, while the police list for students, extensions and TIE issue points to the Brigada in Pontevedra and the units in Tui, Vilagarcía de Arousa and Salvaterra de Miño.

Questions people ask about this

I am here for one semester on Erasmus. Do I register?

Only if the stay goes beyond three months. If you need a NIE for a shorter stay, it comes on the EX-15.

My course lasts five months. Do I need a TIE?

No. A stay for studies of six months or less does not lead to a TIE; your visa covers it.

Where do I ask for an extension?

At the Oficina de Extranjería on Rúa Teófilo Llorente, which lists stays for studies, or online on Mercurio. policia.es also lists extensions in Pontevedra and other units of the province; follow the route your file points to.

Which raft are you tied to?

A few lines are enough: your nationality, where around the ría you live or will live, and what has to be ready by when. We answer by email with the route that fits.
